MissoniPerhaps one of the most iconic of brands, a Missoni pattern is instantly recognizable and always chic. The Missoni story begins in 1947 when OttavioMissoni sets up a knitwear venture with his friend Giorgio Oberweger. In a small workshop in Trieste, Italy, with four machines in all, they produce wool track-suits for practice sessions. Their track-suits, the ‘Venjulia’ were adopted as the uniforms for the Italian team at the 1948 Olympics. The venture grows in 1953 when Ottavio and his new bride, Rosita Jelmini, set up a small knitwear shop in the basement of their building in her hometown. Close to their houseis the factory of shawls and embroidered fabrics founded by her maternal grandparents, the Torrani. By 1958, the first Missoni-labeled dress is presented in Milan. Over time, the Missoni label gained a true following at home and overseas. An iconic design sense had been born. As one article published in the Italian print Il Giorno stated, “They are museum pieces, but you can wear them.” To this day, Missoni continues to re-invent itself, while still sticking to the brightly colored patterns it is known for. Here at The Violet Hour, we love the idea of wearing just a touch of this beautiful and fashionable history in the form of their always-chic scarves and umbrellas.
